The Origin of Studying
Education has been around pretty much forever. Writing systems were created approximately 3,500 BC (Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Mesopotamia, etc.), and education stemmed out of that. Formal education didn't really begin until the Middle Ages (about 500 AD), and then it was very scarce and centered around religion. Beginning in the sixteenth century, colleges began to become more prevalent, and then in the late nineteenth century, elementary education started to become important. As education became more important throughout history, so did tests, and thus finals (and studying for them).
Flashcards, a common method of studying, have been used since the nineteenth century (first introduced in a product called Reading Disentangled, 1834). In the 1970's a German scientific journalist created the leitner system which is an effective way to use flash cards.
